Compost Tumblers – Gardeners Love Them

By Anthony Tripodi If youre looking to turn your garbage into gardeners gold and do it in a hurry, then you should try a compost tumbler. If you have a compost bin then you know how great it is to add compost to your flower beds and vegetable garden. But making compost takes time and its usually in short supply. A compost tumbler is a great time saver when making compost. Some gardeners believe that compost is better than fertilizer because it doesnt just feed your plants, it also improves your soil. Improving your soil keeps your plants healthier so they grow stronger and more capable of fighting off diseases or beating droughts. Compost is decomposed organic matter and is high in nutrients that plants love. Bacteria and other micro organisms help break down that decomposing organic matter and their short life cycles become part of the process itself. When they reproduce their offspring continue the process while the parents bodies break down and add to the organic matter. Its natures way of recycling. Creating compost will usually take a couple of months. If you get the ratio of browns to greens right, turn the pile to keep it aerated and dont let it dry out youll be rewarded with fresh earthy compost. The more you tend your compost pile, the quicker your garden waste will become compost. Neglect the pile and it will still become compost but itll take a lot longer. For an example of this examine the rich soil in a forest. As leaves and tree litter fall to the ground, there isnt anyone there making sure its the same wetness as a wrung out sponge. But by the time the next season rolls around, a lot of those leaves have begun decomposing and in the process, theyre feeding the trees and the cycle continues without any help from man. The gardening season can be very short depending on where you live. In the Northeast we have about 4 months of time to grow the flowers, fruits and vegetables that we love. So unless you have a huge bin of compost ready to go on the first day of spring youll need some more during the growing season. A compost tumbler is perfect for making compost fast. Now you probably wont make enough compost to fill new beds but the amount you can make is perfect to give your plants and nice top dressing. Or if you are a composter with a pest problem, the compost tumbler will keep the critters out of your pile. The most popular tumblers are sealed up and only have holes for air. If rodents or snakes have been problems for you in the past then the compost tumbler is the solution that youve been looking for. Theres a few things youll need to do a little differently if youre used to bin composting. First off, youll need to add all the raw materials at once. Dont continue adding or else your compost will never be done. Add what you want and then start turning. Try to turn it everyday. If not everyday then at least a few times a week. The first few batches will take the longest unless you already have some compost that you can toss into the tumbler. Or you can use a compost activator. Thats all activators really are anyway. Just someones elses compost to help get your pile started. The bacteria and micro organisms have to get in there somehow. Be sure not to over water when using a compost tumbler. Moisture doesnt escape as easily inside the tumbler as with a regular compost bin. And most likely your ingredients such as grass clippings or coffee grinds were already moist to begin with. After about 3 weeks the compost should start to look like compost. It should be an even color and you shouldnt be able to tell what you put in the tumbler. If your waste is still recognizable then let it decompose a while longer. And dont forget to smell your compost. It should have a nice earthy smell to it. If youre looking for a neat & compact composting solution that works quickly and wont receive a lot of attention from your neighbors, then look into a compost tumbler. Youll be tumbling your way to a great garden this season. Anthony Tripodi is the webmaster of WatchItRot.com – The Compost Guide. The ACLU – Their War Against Christmas and You

By Ronald Goldwater Do you dare to say, in public, “Merry Christmas!” to a stranger? Is there a Nativity scene on your front lawn? Are you wearing anything which refers to Christmas? If no, why not? Christians in America face these challenges to religious liberty after thirty years. What’s next? Challenge to Christians The “Presidential Guidelines: Religious Expression in Public School,” issued in 1995, was drafted by the ACLU. Each right of religious expression outlined in the Guidelines contains an escape clause to permit anti-Christian, anti-Christmas, secular groups such as the ACLU to sue if they do not approve of what is being expressed. And, sue, they do.[1] What has that meant for you, so far? The spread of the ACLU mentality regarding Christmas is like a cancer on the spirit of America. The ACLU, in their politically correct war on Christmas, defines diversity as including everyone except Christians. Losses in the Fight for Liberty Caving in to the ACLU’s invisible tyranny, retailers have avoided mention of the word, “Christmas,” in their advertising and displays: Best Buy, Dell, JCPenney, Kroger, Lowe’s, Office Max, Sears, Staples, Target, Walgreen, Wal-Mart,and others.[2] A few of these retailers have, lately, changed their policy. Also in 2005, Jackson County, Georgia school officials, on warning from the ACLU, forbade the wearing of Christmas pins, angels, crosses, or clothing that might refer to Christmas. The ACLU sued a Louisiana elementary school for erecting a Nativity display on school grounds. Last year, they sued in Rhode Island for a Nativity scene being displayed in a city park. Good News Sears, Target, and, perhaps others in the last few days, along with Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s, have begun to use the word, “Christmas,” in advertising and store displays. And, the ACLU lost the Louisiana and Rhode Island cases. But, you, the taxpayer, paid their legal fees. More good news comes in word of legislation being proposed in Congress to curb payments to lawyers in Establishment cases, other than for injunctive relief. More encouragement comes from two polls showing that 95% of Americans observe Christmas[3], and 87% believe Nativity scenes should be allowed in public places[4]. Looking Ahead The ACLU shows no sign of giving up their battle to strip America of its religious liberty. They say, point blank, they want religion out of the public arena. What can you do? Exercise your First Amendment rights. Do not be intimidated by the ACLU, or any other secular, anti-Christian group trying to stifle your free speech. Wear your Christmas pin, angel, cross, or special clothing. Display a Nativity scene. Encourage your public officials to permit Christmas symbols in public, and to allow the word, “Christmas,” to be used freely in public buildings, communications, and school calendars. Jesus Christ said, “You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”[5] [1] Shroder, Jen. “How the ACLU Stole Christmas – Again.” 12-10-04. BlessedCause.org. 12-09-05. Tips That Can Make Caring For Orchid Plants Easier

By Diane Crawford Not very many people are willing to even to attempt to grow or care for orchids, as it can be a very daunting task, even for the most skilled gardener. Orchids are very expensive plants to purchase, and since they come from exotic places, can be difficult to care for properly in the more extreme climate of the United States, but it can be done. To really care for your orchids, you have to take the time to learn about them, and their requirements, so that you can provide them with everything they need to grow and be beautiful. You can find a lot of information on the Internet about caring for orchids, or may want to visit your local gardening shop, florists shop, library, or bookstore for even more resources. Once you have read up on caring for orchids plants, you should be ready to try your hand at it. One of the first things you need to do is pay special attention to the type of orchid that you have, so that you can more accurately gauge just how much water and food it needs. Many people are not successful in caring for their orchids because they mistakenly give them too much water, which in some cases, can be even worse than not giving them enough water. Orchids do well in humid environments, but you have to make certain that you don’t overdo it. Some types of orchids need extra water, and their soil should always be a little damp to the touch, such as the Miltonia, Cymbidium, Paphiopedilum, and the Odontoglossum varieties. You should check the soil for moisture daily in these orchids, and add water as needed, remembering to do so a little at a time, so as not to overdo it. Other types of orchids do well and only have to have water about one time each week, and you don’t really have to worry about keeping the soil moist, as they actually do better in drier conditions. If you have Vanda, Ascocenda, or Phalaenopsis orchids, you don’t really have to worry about them as much, at least not when it comes to watering. If you care for other plants, then you know that they require fertilizer to grow properly, and the same is true when it comes to caring for orchid plants. Your best solution when it comes to fertilizing your orchids is to purchase a brand that is designed specifically for orchids, and then make certain that you follow the package directions closely. If you give your orchids too much fertilizer, you could easily damage, or even kill them. Just about all plants require light to grow, and orchids are no exception. To get those full, beautiful blooms, your orchid has to have adequate light. The amount of light that your orchid requires will vary, depending upon the exact type of orchid that you have. Cattleyas and Dendrobiums need more light than any other type, and thrive on it, so if you have these types of orchids, make certain that you have them in an area that gets lots of sunlight throughout the day. Phalaaenopsis and Paphiopedilums do not require as much light, and will do well in almost any area of your home. There are ways to tell if your orchid isn’t getting sufficient light. If you look at the leaves of your orchid, and notice that they are very, very dark green, they probably need more light. If they appear red, of have a reddish tint to them, then you probably are allowing them too much light, and should think of moving them to a better location. If you have a difficult time placing your orchids in a good spot, you can purchase a specially designed light, that can provide them with artificial sunlight, and in fact, many gardeners prefer this type of light, as they are in control of it, and can monitor exactly how much exposure their orchids get each day. If you do a good job in caring for your orchids, they could live for many, many years. As your orchids grow, you will probably need to plan on repotting them about every other year or so. When you repot an orchid, it is important that you don’t do it while the orchid is blooming, as you could possibly kill or damage your plant. It is important that you choose a pot that is large enough to hold the orchid and allow it room to grow, and that before you replant the orchid in a new pot, you carefully remove any dead leaves or roots from the orchid. Once you transplant the orchid into its new pot, you should leave it alone for about a week, and then carry on with your usual water and fertilizer routines. You will find that caring for your orchids really isn’t that difficult, once you learn how to do it properly. Once you have a routine down for providing adequate light, food, and water, your orchid could essentially live as long as you….imagine that! A lot goes into caring for orchid plants. What High School Students Can Do Over the Summer

By Jackie Shapiro There are so many options for summer activities, no wonder it can be difficult to know where to begin. While reviewing how IvyWise students have spent their summers, I noticed that their plans fell under six basic categories. I included the a few examples in each category to help you get started. 1. Make a Difference Community service is always a valuable endeavor, and the summer is a wonderful time to make a difference in your community. One IvyWise student spent two summers in high school traveling to India, where she worked to improve the environment of a local community where she had family. Another IvyWise student worked full time with children with disabilities. 2. Explore a Career High school is a time to begin exploring possible careers for later in life. This is especially true for juniors and seniors who may want practical work experience before deciding what to study in college. One IvyWise student knew she loved discussing movies with her friends, but had no formal experience in the film business. Therefore, she used the summer before her junior year of high school to intern with an independent film company. Doing so gave her the practical experience that helped her realize that she did, in fact, want to study film in college. As a visual artist also interested in business, another IvyWise student decided to spend the summer before his senior year in college working for an advertising firm. Over the summer he realized that advertising was not the profession for him. Eliminating a career possibility brought him a step closer to discovering what he truly enjoys. 3. Follow a Passion One IvyWise student just loved biology. He took every possible science course available in his large high school, but it never seemed to be enough. Therefore, he decided to spend his summer doing research with a professor at a university well known for its strength in the sciences. He was able to spend most of the summer doing cancer research, and included a summary of his work in his college applications. Another IvyWise student had a passion for all things French. Therefore, she spent the summer before her junior year of high school in France, studying the language, teaching English, and exploring the culture. 4. Try Something New Taking a risk and trying something new isnt always easy, but high school is a great time to learn to take risks and by doing so, discover new interests and talents. One IvyWise student had never picked up a camera in her life, but decided that the summer before her sophomore year of high school, shed like to try. She enrolled in a photography program, and developed her skills as a photographer. Another IvyWise student spoke Spanish at home, but decided to use his Spanish language skills in a new way. On a service trip to the Dominican Republic, he became the translator for the group, and facilitated connections between his peers and the people they encountered on their trip. He learned how his language skills could help him connect with people with whom he had previously thought he had little in common. 5. Achieve a Goal Getting away from the hectic schedule of high school can mean more time to do those things you always wanted, but never had the time. A politically inclined IvyWise student decided he would read all the non- fiction political books he could find, as he was rarely assigned such a book in high school. At the end of the summer he had an impressive reading list (that he actually included in his college application), and became more confident when discussing his ideas. Of course, goals depend on the individual, and could include climbing a mountain, learning to knit, becoming more outgoing, or writing a novel. 6. Do What You Want In addition to the programs, the internships, the jobs, the college visits, or whatever else might be part of your summer, there should also be time for family, friends, and just for you. No matter how you spend your summer, do not forget to do the things that make you feel happy and energizedwhether that means spending extra time with your younger sibling before you leave for college, swimming in the ocean, making time to see friends you havent seen in awhile between tests and athletic games, reflecting on the past year, going out for ice cream, or anything else, you shouldnt forget to relax and have fun. The Two Types of Student Consolidation Loans

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Jeanette_Pollock]Jeanette Pollock In todays world, education is undoubtedly important. These days, it is incredibly difficult to succeed unless you have had some sort of education. Unfortunately, education is now also quite expensive, which is why students have to take out many loans to finance their way to school. For some student, paying off their loans is no big deal, especially if they land a great job right after college. However, many graduates are not as fortunate. If by some twist of fate these graduates are unable to find a good job, or perhaps become underemployed, interest charges on these loans can compound quickly, creating a financial crisis. For those who have a hard time paying off their student loans, student loan consolidation is the answer. By merging all existing loans into a single loan with the lowest possible interest rate, the process of repayment will be made simpler and less burdensome. This also minimizes the possibility of missing a payment and incurring penalties. There are two main types of student consolidation loans, federal student loans and private student loans. Federal student loans are the most affordable options available to students, as they generally offer lower rates than the average loan. As the name suggests, these loans are provided by the government. Because they are subsidized by government as part of its educational assistance to students, they are easy to procure and sport student-friendly interest rates. Private student loans, also known as personal student loans or alternative student loans are loans with a comparatively high interest rate, especially when juxtaposed with a federal student loan. As the name implies, these loans can only be procured from private institutions. Unlike federal student loans, private loans are harder to obtain. Because interest rates are much lower with federal student loans than with private student loans, you are generally better off with the former. Know your Man: Messing Around

By Maria Moratto Q: What is a man’s idea of helping out with housework? A: Lifting his leg so you can vacuum. “It’s a wise husband who will buy his wife such fine china that she won’t trust him to wash the dishes.” ~ Anon Given a chance, most men will drink out of the juice bottle; will leave the food that goes in the fridge uncovered; will leave the vacuum cleaner in the middle of the living room; will leave the bed unmade; will not do the dishes; will leave the bathroom towel on the floor; will drop his pajamas on the floor and retrieve them untouched at bedtime; will put an empty icemaker back in the freezer, and so on and so forth. In general, these things mean practically nothing to themthough I know many who are just the opposite. One of my husbands was like this. It would drive me nuts that he would remove his PJs pants leaving them on the floor and in the evening, would easily put them back on as if this was the most common thing in the world. I hated that because I was the one who had to pick them up, if I wanted them off the floor. My other husband, on the other hand, was a cleaning freak, so to speak; only he would not move a hand to clean. Thank heavens we were in Brazil at that time and luckily had an assistant in charge of the household chores, the clothes and the cooking (i.e., a maid, for the less politically correct) who would then make sure that everything was spotless just as he liked them to be. Now I think: well, if their behavior bothered me, shouldnt I be the one to take care of this situation and stop nagging? Nowadays, my son leaves an empty icemaker in the freezer. What do I do? Tell him, please, to fill it with water before putting it back. Does he do this? Sometimes. When he doesnt, I will do it for him. Now, a question remains: why am I so forgiving of my son whereas I was never forgiving of my life-partners? It dawned on me that the reason is pure and simple and it is called unconditional love. So now, if we are so indulgent with our children, as many of us are, it follows that, logically, we should be as forgiving with our men. After all, shouldnt we love them unconditionally as well? Is there any other kind of love? A Word of Advice: Ladies: Put yourselves in their place. Who wants to do things you are not cut off for? Have a heart and compromise. Gents: If your spouse wants a neat house, why dont you tell her do the cleaning and chores inside the house and you will help out by doing other things outside of the home, such as fixing things when they break, taking the car for oil changes, etc.? Make it a fair arrangement. Of course, you must share parenting. Ladies and Gents: If both of you truly hate housework, inside and outside, stop bickering and hire help! A story: In Madrid Spanish lawmakers introduced a new marriage contract this week that stipulates men must do half of the housework. The new vows will be used in civil marriage ceremonies starting this autumn. Wives wont be able to take their husbands to court for being lazy, but in case of divorce, a husband who has done less than his share will have to pay more alimony. Men have to learn to start taking more responsibility in the home, said Margarita Uria, the member of the parliament who authored the bill, and women have to help them do it. (The Week, July 1, 2005, p.8). My two cents: Margarita Uria is just like I was: a total moron when it comes to understanding the opposite sex. And vindictive, too! Signaling Criteria and a Marketing Mistake

By Craig Lutz-Priefert Heres a line from Law and Order, Criminal Intent that every marketer should memorize. DA Arthur Branch, about to sign an arrest warrant for a judge in a high-profile case: Its not enough to do good; you gotta be seen doing good. And thats the essence of signaling criteria. In his classic Competitive Advantage Michael Porter mentions two types of buyer criteria: use criteria = what the product does for the buyersignaling criteria = how the buyer thinks or feels about what the product does for the buyer Many marketers think their job ends at providing effective signaling criteria. We say: Hey, Ive told a great story, Ive produced a super TV spot, my click-through rates are fantasticIve done my job. And by one measure, you have. If you are hired to write a great ad and nothing else, then yes youve certainly done the client right. But if you own a small business, or if you are in charge of company-wide marketing, or if you own an agency that wants to keep an account for years, then you better quickly learn to pay attention to use criteria. Because, as Porter so accurately point out, a company can make an OK product and create superior marketing communications and best a company that turns out a superior product but fails to let the customer know how great the product really is. For a while. But eventually a competitor with so-so advertising but better products usually catches up with the advertising leader. The advertising message is forgotten, and the user is stuck with the product. And the product, unless it is really fantastic, doesnt speak for itself. And if theres a better competitive product out there, the customer is going to find it eventually. And Porter wrote this in the 80s, before instant internet product reviews were available. Whats the smart marketer to do? Keep signaling–after the sale. Craig Lutz-Priefert is President of Marketing Hawks, a firm providing essential marketing vision for small business. Marketing Hawks also provides expert sales presentation review at their VideoMyPitch website. Valentines Day Around The World

By Sean Carter In America, the custom of giving gifts and cards on Valentine’s Day is very popular. From children to adults, siblings to lovers, everyone exchanges gifts and wishes of love on Valentine’s Day. Apart from gifts, it is even common to have Valentine’s Day parties. These parties generally see a lot of dancing and singing. Romantic dinners, picnics and get-togethers are also common on Valentines Day in the United States of America. In England, special Valentine’s Day songs are sung by kids and they receive gifts of chocolates, fruits or sometimes even cash gifts. In some parts of England, folks make buns with dry fruits like raisins on Valentine’s Day. It is also a popular custom in England to write love poems. These poems are written to honor the patron of love, St. Valentine. Tabloids and magazines overflow with love verses on Valentine’s Day in England. Italians have a custom of getting engaged on Valentines Day. Some women in Italy also believe that the first man they see on Valentine’s Day will be their future husband and so they stand near the window on Valentine’s Day morning to see their life-partner walk past in all glory. These apart, on Valentine’s Day, shops in Italy sell candies in china jars, tied with red ribbons. These make for favorite Valentine’s Day gifts on February 14. In Denmark, gaekkebrevs (joking letters) are sent out on Valentine’s Day in which the senders write light poems and sign their names only in dots. The person receiving the gaekkebrev has to guess who sent it and if it is guessed correctly, then he or she will get an Easter egg from the sender on Easter. Like the Americans, people in Germany and Austria and also give out Valentines Day gifts, flowers, cards and chocolates to their wives on Valentines Day.
